Romania is the 9th largest country (238,391 km2 or 92,043 sq mi) among the European Union members and the 7th largest population which is of 21.5 million citizens. The capital and also the biggest city is Bucharest (Bucureşti in Romanian). One of the most beautiful cities of our country, Sibiu, from Transylvania (Yes, Dracula!) was elected as the European Capital of Culture for 2007.

Romania is a country located in the Southeast of Europe that has direct access to the Black Sea. The Danube, the longest river on the territory of The Europe Union passes through our country for a longer distance than any other and flows into the Black Sea at one of Romania's most beautiful area, the Danube Delta. The country also has a beautiful range of mountains called the Carpathian Mountains that can be found across Central and Eastern Europe but the longest part lies on the territory of our country. The highest peek in Romania exceed 2,500 m (8,530 ft). It has a temperate continental climate with temperatures ranging from −15 °C (5.0 °F) to 35 °C (95 °F).

The formerly Kingdom of Romania has been formed after World War I in 1918. At the end of World War II, Romania it was mostly occupied by USSR and the country was declared a socialist republic. The country has been under the domination of communists for a long period of time, being under the command of Nicolae Ceauşescu.  After the fall of the Iron Courtain, the Wall of Berlin, but most important after the Romanian Revolution from 1989, the country has been freed of communism and became a democratic and state. Shortly after this terrible period, Romania has joined NATO in 2004 and is a member of the European Union since 2007. There were important progress in the economy of the country, who suffered alot since the end of communism. In a few years we should change our currency  to the Euro and remove the boarders with other countries. The progress are slow but visible.

You may know Romania by the popular legend of Count Dracula. He wasn't really a vampire but I guess everybody knows him for being one. In fact, he was called Vlad Ţepeş or simply Dracula for the strangers, and was the voivode of Wallachia (the ruler of the Southern Region of Romania)  during the 15th century. His name, Ţepeş means the Impaller, yep that's right, he actually impaled the criminals and opponents. It was something common at that time...but he really did this to enemies who threatened his people and also thieves and criminals! He really implemented a very rigorous law and was very strict. People feared him ( because he could impale them), so if somebody left a treasure outside of their house, nobody would have touched if because he would had found out and impaled the thief. It is usually misunderstood that he lived in the Bran Castle but actually he was kept as a prisoner there for a few days! Bram Stoker liked that name and the terrible story of his killings and it seems that he invented Count Dracula the vampire based on Vlad Ţepeş.

You might also know Romania for sport icons like Nadia Comăneci, the famous Romanian gymnast who was the first to receive a score of 10 in an Olympic contest. Other sport icons are also Ilie Năstase, one of the best tennis players in the '70s  and Gheorghe Hagi who was named for his talent and achievements in football the "The Maradona of the Carpathians". There's also George Enescu one of worlds famous composer and also a well known violinist and pianist. There are many more but I don't want to bore you with it. Maybe one more, have you ever heard of O-zone? It's the band which created the famous song "Dragostea din tei".
